Albert Einstein said, "In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity." This unprecedented public health crisis has allowed us to not only reflect on current practices but to also participate in groundbreaking opportunities for our students. As a result of the challenges that arose out of this pandemic, we have discovered new ways to engage, connect with, and support students during this time of remote learning and social distancing we would never have thought possible.
These scholars are so motivated and eager to learn.
Despite their circumstances, they attempt to be in school every day ready to take on the challenges.
Every day crisis plays out in classrooms around the city, where thousands of students struggle to keep up in school while dealing with the trauma of not having stable public housing, parents losing jobs, families facing food deserts and income inequality. As educators, it is important to be supportive of all students.
Among the drastic changes that have taken place, school closures have brought many uncertainties and concerns for our community. In the evolving world of COVID-19, remote classrooms have rapidly become the new normal.
Supporting students and ensuring they are up and ready for school is crucial when it comes to attendance and academic success.
Despite the challenges due to COVID-19 my students are doing their best to learn from home and look forward to connecting with me virtually. However, oftentimes students have so much going on, they sleep late and may miss their class.
Currently, our middle school attendance chronically absenteeism rate is about 53%. We know that every school day counts and missed instructional time is one of the key predictors in not meeting academic expectations at all grade levels. Attendance and student achievement goes hand-in-hand and with An Amazon Echo Dot for each student, the students can set alarms to be up for class, ask Alexa to play music, ask for the weather, control compatible smart home devices, and more.
Smart alarms are beginning to prove their value and are worth the money paid for them. They have completely revolutionized the way we sleep and wake up, and can help my students get off to a good start in the morning.
