This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou. This quote from Maya Angelou is our class motto. My objective is for my students to continue to be motivated and challenged so that they can keep boosting their own confidence and achieving success to fully develop their self-potential.
I teach a group of special education students who experience learned helplessness every day because they were told that their disability hinders their learning.
In reality, all they truly need is to rediscover the joy of learning. And once that light bulb clicks, my students can bring a positive classroom energy that continually inspires and motivates others. Our school provides such a stimulating, collaborative, and safe environment for students of various differences and abilities that students are often celebrated for their diversity and achievements. I work for a school where teachers put students first.
My Project
After attending the CUE conference, I discovered the many ways Alexa could be used in a classroom…and possibly as my new teaching assistant to reinforce content. I will be able to get Alexa to provide basic information and perform simple tasks such as number sense facts and setting a timer.
There are many ways that Alexa can help me in the classroom now and the possibilities are endless.
It will replace my probability tools such as my dice, cards, and coins, as Alexa can take care of that for me. Just ask her to flip a coin, pick a card, roll a dice, or pick a random number. Alexa can also support literacy by having students ask her how to spell a specific word, suggest a synonym, or provide a definition. Students can use Alexa to check their Math work when they are done with an assignment. Alexa is also great at converting units of measurements! Alexa can be used to play a track like “Nature Sounds for Relaxation” while they use their variety of fidget tools such as the stress balls, fidget spinners and cubes to give them an opportunity to unwind and self-regulate their emotions before dismissal.
With the kid version, my students can access content they’ll love, such as skills and music designed specifically for them that are helpful and relevant in the classroom. The list of skills continues to grow but a few that I know of include playing age-appropriate music, answering questions, asking for the weather, telling stories, riddles, and more. The addition of an Amazon Echo Dot for kids will provide a way for students to interact with Alexa and learn in a fun way.
