My Project

Hello I am a lifelong Alaskan living in Fairbanks, Alaska. I have my Masters in Social Work and have been working in a school for ten years.

Covid has impacted the social and emotional learning in our school by a landslide.

We are located in a vulnerable neighborhood with a high low-income population attending our Title One Elementary. This school has a high indigenous population located in central Alaska. Remote learning proved to be difficult for these students with the barriers of- parents working full time, lack of internet access, lack of transportation, food insecurity and several other unidentified barriers.

The first critical years of learning social skills, following rules, and school expectations were missed during this period of time.

My goal is to set the students up for success by instilling the importance of social and emotional learning so they have a higher chance of being resilient and overcoming difficult situations. The room I am outfitting will be a quiet/Zen/calming room ran by the School Social Worker. A seed planted today will harvest flowers in the future.

The items in my cart will help decorate the room to help create a calm and restorative environment. The carpet and chairs will be the center of the small groups where we hold social skills lunch bunch, and restorative recess resets. The social emotional posters will help students learn and create an inviting room where a student can feel safe. The social skill games, books, and workbooks will be used as the material for these social skills groups.
