Alaska Literature, Part 3

My students need small reading group sets of 15 different books of Alaska literature for their Alaska Literature class. A good experience in this class can help them complete the requirements to graduate from high school.

My Students

I teach an alternative program in a rural Alaska fishing village. My students have failed and/or dropped out of school. Many of them have been labeled failures by their family and friends.

The alternative program gives my students the chance to return to school.

It is a second start for them, a new beginning. Many found school boring and despaired of finding success, let alone graduating. Five of my students are teen parents. Many have been jailed because of substance abuse problems. Studies have shown that high school drop-outs have a much higher likelihood of committing suicide. Since suicide is already very high among Alaska natives, finishing high school can be a matter of life or death.

My Project

My students need 15 different books of Alaska literature for their Alaska literature class. In order for my students to succeed, it is important to discover a passion for reading. If they can recover this passion they can get excited about school. Reading from books about Alaska is fun and exciting for my students. If they can recover their enthusiasm for school by reading, then they will be in a much better position to succeed in their other classes. A good experience in their Alaska Literature class can help them complete the requirements to graduate from high school.

It is important for my students to realize that others care for them.

Many feel a sense of shame at their failures. Many feel that their friends and family have given up on them. Even worse, some have given up on themselves. Thanks for remembering my students, and being part of the world that is giving them a second chance.
