This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have some amazing students with a spirit and determination that never quits. Our students are in a self-contained Severe/Profound class of 4, in grades K through 3. Most are wheelchair bound students that depend on us for a lot of their care.
Our students need to change positions several times throughout the day as their abilities to control their bodies are limited.
Our students are full of energy and life. They do not let the disabilities that life gave them define who they are as individuals.
My Project
We are very lucky in the fact that our school is currently undergoing renovations. We are not only receiving the usual updates that come with a renovation, but are receiving updated lighting, technology, and rubber tile flooring.
Our special needs classrooms need carpeted areas for the students.
Our students spend most of their school day in wheelchairs or in the adaptive seating and positioning equipment that we have, both of which are on the floors. We also have some students that are able to move out of their chairs onto the floors. Tile flooring can become very cool in the colder weather months, preventing us from being able to allow our students out of their chairs since their bodies do not always adapt very well to the change in temperature.
