Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With a campus located in the middle of vast orange groves, many of my learners' families are farm workers of the Central Valley - the untiring, unsung heroes whose dedicated labor provides food for our nation. These kids and their families work hard and truly deserve the best.
My learners are eager to come to school each and every day, in spite of their difficult socioeconomic situations, and I am honored to facilitate their learning in the art studio.
I know from personal experience how art can help us process our thoughts and feelings, connect us, and transform us as humans.
My most important role in our learning environment is to show up every day and provide a safe space for my learners to hone their artistic skills, explore their ideas, and question their surroundings. A rich, academically rigorous visual arts curriculum is dependent on costly consumable materials.
Thanks to you, my learners will have the opportunity to initiate a new tradition for upperclassmen and leave behind a piece of their legacy to inspire future artists of our high school.
My Project
My artists will learn about air plants, which differ from those they learn about in their horticulture classes and personal experiences. Then, they will explore the properties of clay -- how to make various shapes, how to attach pieces of clay together, and how to use different modeling tools to form shapes.
As a final clay project, my artists will create and paint a clay vessel for their very own air plant.
They will have the opportunity to keep it for themselves, or give it as a gift to a favorite teacher, family member, friend, or loved one. My artists love plants, and they love exploring 3D materials, so I know they will be so energized to use clay for a project!
