My Students
Hello! I am a seventh and eight grade Math teacher in the School District of Philadelphia. My students are bused from a nearby housing project (80%) and are in need of everyday necessities let alone school supplies.
Mathematicians need your help with some materials to enhance our understanding of Math concepts.
Because the children earned very low PSSA scores in Math and Reading, we have interventions in place but majority of the students do not have headphones to fully utilize the programs. They school also has limited supplies as the district has cut funding.
Teaching children complicated concepts such as slope and translations of figures requires hands-on manipulatives to be successful! Our school lacks many of the tools necessary to teach Math to Proficiency and beyond! Many of our children lack basic skills and or have very limited access to technology outside of school! I am doing my best to expose our children to various types of instruction so they have multiple opportunities for learning.
My Project
Teaching middle school math concepts can be challenging but I've learned that small group instruction is the key. The materials will be used in centers as well as for projects. The art materials and wipe off boards/markers are used daily in graphing, review activities, small group, peer tutoring and Geometry lessons.
It is my experience that students whose teacher uses various instructional strategies gain a greater understanding and make connections to what is being taught.
When teaching about slope and graphing of lines, the four quadrant boards allow me to see from a distance who may need more help. I also use markers and wipe off boards to play various math games.
I asked for graph chart paper because some students have difficulty drawing straight lines. I will use these pads with my students who may have learning challenges. They also are great for making anchor charts for concepts such as slope, slope intercept form, graphing of lines, and scatterplots, in order for the students to "read the room".
