My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to students who struggle with basic decoding and comprehension. They give up an elective to be placed in a reading class. My five classes are made up of a range of students who read between first grade to just below grade level.

While they might prefer to be in a gym or art class, my students are good sports and work hard to improve their reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.

When I find a good text, they are on board and ready to fly! They are kind and help one another improve their reading on a daily basis.

My Project

I have been writing DonorsChoose projects and funding healthy snacks out of pocket for my reading students for the past 5 years. The kids are very motivated by and benefit from having healthy snacks during the day. The supplies from this project will directly build their bodies and brains and enable them to receive the instruction to become grade level readers.

The kids come into my room drained and hungry; popcorn, a granola bar, a handful of almonds or a piece of string cheese makes all the difference in their ability to think and learn.

Prior to eating a healthy snack, many of the kids have their heads on the table and struggle to focus on instructions and the learning at hand. However, by having a supply of snacks and providing the kids with water and sustenance, their faces and minds light up and they can concentrate and learn.
