My Project

I’m requesting funding to purchase classroom sets of Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Klara and the Sun isn’t just a beautifully written novel—it’s a timely, thought-provoking text that meets students where they are while pushing them to think critically about where we’re going.

Set in a not-so-distant future, it follows Klara, an Artificial Friend, as she navigates human relationships, hope, loneliness, and the complexities of love and belief. These are questions my students are already grappling with in their own lives—sometimes without the language or framework to make sense of them. This book gives us a way in.

My goals with this novel are threefold:

Develop Critical Literacy Skills: Students will analyze themes of identity, technology, and morality, using evidence to support their interpretations in both discussion and writing.

Foster Ethical Reflection: Klara’s story provides a lens to examine what it means to be human—an essential question in today’s tech-driven world. Through guided discussion and reflection, students will consider empathy, agency, and the implications of AI in society.

Encourage Personal Growth and Perspective-Taking: Klara’s innocence and observations allow students to reflect on their own beliefs, assumptions, and choices.

My students are on the edge of adulthood, about to make decisions that will shape their futures. They come from a mix of backgrounds, and many are juggling academics, part-time jobs, and family responsibilities. Despite the challenges, they show up with curiosity, humor, and a growing sense of purpose.

What they need—and deserve—are books that challenge them to think in new ways, that respect their maturity while helping them grow.

Funds will be used to purchase a classroom set of Klara and the Sun (45 copies). Students will be able to annotate, engage deeply with the text, and participate in discussions without the barriers of limited access or shared materials.
