My Students

My students come from all walks of life. The student body consists of a majority of the minority races. My classes are small in size (minimum 9, maximum 15). I know that is what every teacher would love to have, but my students are emotionally handicapped, special ed, ADD, ADHD, etc. Most of the student body is on free & reduced lunch. The neighborhoods they come from are usually not the greatest: low-income projects, section 8 housing, neighborhoods that have gang presence, etc.

When I have the students work on a project, they are at first apprehensive to try something different.

Most of the time, they just want to do free paint because they love paint. They love paint so much that I am running out of paint and the first semester is not yet finished (17 days and counting)! They also love to waste paint on their palettes. At one time, I had 25 overfilled palettes that were going to go to waste. I used those palettes to create some of my own artwork.

My Project

Not every student have access to the various medias that are available in art classes. Some schools do not have art classes because materials and supplies take a huge chunk out of a school's budget. They are just limited to crayons, markers, colored pencils and paper.

Students that are able to use clay can really expand their creativity and imagination in a three-dimensional form.

My students will look at different ceramicists and the different styles/techniques that can be done with clay. There is more to art than just paper and pencil.

The ceramic project will focus on small scale sized monsters based on artist James de Rosso. Students will look at his artwork and then create their own version of one of his monsters using the techniques that I will teach them.
