This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a brand new school that just opened this school year. Because of this, the only furniture in the classroom is the bare necessities (i.e. desks, chairs, and one table for small groups). The third graders in my class love coming to school and learning new things. Our school caters to Title I, low income, high need students in the Las Vegas area. Our students and their families benefit from free and reduced-price meals and many do not have access to books and other supplies. Most of our students are at least one grade level behind in their academics. Our school currently does not have a library, so all reading supplies are supplied by either the families or the teachers themselves.

My Project

At our school, we use a blended learning program called iReady. This program has a required listening portion and unfortunately, we do not have enough headphones for our entire classroom which forces students to have to buy their own and bring them to school every day. Having a class set, plus a few extras in case some break, would help our students tremendously. iReady is an adaptive program so whatever level the student is at, they are pushed forward working on skills for math and reading that they need most. Some students will be working on phonics and counting while others will be working on deeper comprehension skills and equivalent fractions. These head phones will help students move ahead in their education. in addition to iReady, a mandatory program at our school, students can also go on to getepic, a website that has an extensive library of books, read along books, and audio books, that helps students find a new love and passion for reading. As a lot of our classmates are at least 1 full grade level below grade level in reading, this program has helped build up the skills and passion needed for moving up in their reading skills.
