My Project

Determined, dedicated, and willing to go the extra mile. My students come from some of the most difficult situations I have ever encountered and yet, they seem to make the best of what they have. Many of them are directly effected by rampant drug use in the local community, but are able to perform and succeed at a high level. You won't encounter a nicer group of kids who just want someone to appreciate their constant hard work and determination.

My students practice hard, 20 hours a week minimum.

They take great pride in their craft of music, but when we go to share our gifts the impact isn't what it could be sometimes. It gets frustrating when the kids put in so many hours of work to only have a 5-8 minute performance, where a panel of judges decide placement. The old drum heads we currently use are old and worn out thus the performance suffers and the kids walk away disappointed, imagining what could have been. We aren't as competitive with old stretched out heads, as all the other groups we compete against all have new drum heads every year. Funding isn't what is once was, parent involvement and help is near non-existent, and fundraising is so saturated school-wide that there isn't enough to go around money wise.
