This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.... - Barack Obama
I have a wonderful group of 5th grade students who are highly motivated and have a true passion for learning.
They are my inspiration as they push me to think outside of the box to develop learning experiences to meet their varying interests and diverse needs. My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed! I teach at a Title1 school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share a common goal in the education of their children.
My Project
The project is inspired by Let's Adjust Our Behavior and Save Water. I am requesting materials to deepen my students' understanding of the water cycle, weather patterns, and drought conditions. My students will work in pairs and use the water cycle learning centers and lab to be introduced to how water travels in very simple and complex cycles. They will use the literature to understand how weather plays a role in the redistribution of water on our planet and the heating and cooling of the Earth's surface. Students will view and analyze the concepts in the video in order to understand how weather variables lead to extreme weather conditions such as droughts. Students will extend their learning by creating comic stories written from the perspective of a water molecule, create watercolor art to share the message of conservation to be displayed in an art gallery where other classes will be invited to attend, and write opinion pieces using the Kids Discover texts to support reasoning.
I was very excited to be given the opportunity to replicate this project because of the extreme drought conditions that we are experiencing in our state and how important and urgent it has become to conserve.
I want to teach the science behind the phenomenon, but it is my hope that students will also see themselves as agents of change and do their part to conserve our precious and limited natural resources. They will make the difference for generations to come!
