Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fun-loving, smart and hard working! Our students come from all across the city to participate in the unique, ELL (English Language Learner) program specific for grades 6-8.
My students come from all different backgrounds to create a positive learning environment, where they will be encouraged to brainstorm, collaborate, and create works of art.
Students at our middle school take art class for an entire school year as their elective/specials class and range in different skill levels and abilities.
My Project
My students love to explore their talents through art. These books will be used for students to reference while they work, and to use during free choice time in between projects. While working, students sometimes need extra inspiration to spark their creativity. With an art library full of age appropriate books, my students will be able to gain inspiration while they are sketching, and planning their artwork. When students complete their projects early, they will be given the opportunity to explore art-themed books in the art library.
When working at the elementary level, I began collecting books for students to reference.
These books allowed students to have a positive mindset while working by seeing multiple examples from famous artists, techniques otherwise not shown in class, and gain inspiration in addition to examples that are shown in class during lessons and demonstrations. Starting at a secondary level school, I want to give my new students the opportunity to explore art at their own pace with these books. These books help students understand sometimes difficult concepts, and techniques. Although building an art library is costly, it will benefit many middle school students for years to come.
