My Students

Our school is an English Language Learners Magnet School set in a suburban neighborhood outside of Boise, Idaho. While the vast majority of our students live within one mile of the school, our classrooms have students who originate from more than 16 different countries. We are a diverse, multi-cultural bunch of curious minds and unique individuals. In addition to our diverse backgrounds, our students have a wide variety of interests and skill levels.

We are writers, poets, mathematicians, engineers, scientists, mac-&-cheese lovers, and future unicorn owners.

Our classrooms are stuffed with eager minds, who love to learn together. Our school has slightly more boys than girls. Some have baby sisters on the way and some have brothers in the military. Some live with extended family, some have traveled very far to be here, and some have been in the same suburban home their entire lives.

Like all kids, the students in our school are eager and enthusiastic for each new learning adventure, from learning decimals in math, to Idaho's symbols, to S.T.E.M. projects rich in problem-solving and critical thinking, to becoming skilled and independent readers and writers. Their enthusiasm is catching, which makes my job exceptional.

My Project

Our school is beginning an After-School S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Club. The club will be available to interested 4th & 5th grade students. S.T.E.A.M. clubs provide a platform where students can exercise their creative muscle, work with real-world problem solving, develop their critical thinking skills, and practice working productively and reflectively in teams with other students.

One study of students participating in after-school STEAM/STEM Clubs found that: 89 percent reported increased self‐confidence and 70 percent had an increased motivation to do well in school.

Additionally, 80 percent of the study respondents reported an increased understanding of the role of science and technology in everyday life; 86 percent reported an increased interest in science and technology, generally, and 69 percent had an increased interest in STEM careers. STEAM/STEM Clubs have positive impacts when filling future STEM jobs, as well as positive impacts on students' perception of school and motivation to succeed in school.

The resources I've chosen for this project will give us the tools to conduct a wide variety of themed STEM/STEAM Challenges. Students will receive explicit instruction in STEM topics and be given a challenge to problem solve. Working in small groups with the materials requested, they will design, troubleshoot, test, and redesign. Each challenge will culminate with a presentation and debrief of learning. This gives students multi-disciplinary practice in real-world thinking, problem solving, and reflection.
