After School STEAM and STEM Lego Club for rural youth

Help me give my students parts to supplement what we have for a safe after school opportunity to engage in a LEGO club with STEM and STEAM based challenges.

My Project

The Mattole Unified School District and the Mattole Valley Resource Center have come together to provide a year-round Lego Club for rural youth in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Students served by the Mattole Unified School District qualify for Title I funding and have a high percentage of students covered by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

They live in a highly rural area that is limited by distance from many of the kinds of opportunities that other students have.

In 2023 The Mattole Valley Resource Center responded to the request of an eight-year-old and began the first Lego Club as a summer program. Securing a small grant, the resource center purchased a box of used mixed bricks and opened a weekly club for kids to gather and engage in Lego. For two years Lego Club drew the most participants of any youth program in the valley.

This fall the Mattole Unified School District has made Lego Club year-round. Using the same bricks and the after-school funding for snacks Lego Club has become the most well attended club at the school.

Facilitated by the local STEAM teacher, Malia Freedlund, and parent, Nichole Gagliano, the Mattole Lego Club brings monthly challenges to the students to inspire new ways to work with Lego such as marble mazes and balloon powered cars. After working collaboratively and with creativity and imagination each student practices their presentation skills by describing elements and challenges of their build.

TThese suppliments will help as we work to make our weekly challenges more STEAM and STEM oriented.

We are looking for more wheels which are essential for some of the STEM challenges, foliage of any kind, and basic mixed brick. The engines available in the education set would be an absolute dream.
