This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are all learning English and are all recent immigrants who have come to the United States seeking a great education and unlimited opportunity. They reside in Queens, the most diverse location in the world. In our school alone, you can hear over a dozen languages spoken by more than two dozen nationalities. My students want what we all do - a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world.

My Project

When the bell rings, many students want to stay to continue their work with peers and teachers, but their stomachs are telling them otherwise. If they go home, or simply hang around the neighborhood, for a couple of dollars they can get a snack to keep them going until dinner.

We don't have any food available after school because the cafeteria closes immediately after lunch.

There is also no money available in our budget to continue feeding our students. More than 90% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch because their families do not have the income to provide meals throughout the day. Coming to school with a snack to keep them going when they get hungry is simply beyond the means of most of my students.

They use a ton of energy learning in a foreign language - English, and can really use a snack around 3:30. It would encourage them to stay for extra help, finish a project, or do an extracurricular activity. Help me keep my learners motivated to stay, and keep their minds sharp with some quick and healthy snacks.
