M High School is a Title I school with the entirety of the school’s population eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Many of our students start ninth grade labeled as “transition” as their reading and math skills fall far below grade level expectations. During the 2016-2017 school year, McNair students averaged an 875 overall score on the SAT, placing them well below both DeKalb County’s average score (973) and Georgia’s average score (1,028).
Our students thrive when given an opportunity to get ahead coupled with appropriate support.
Unfortunately, our students do not always have a strong support system that helps guide them through college applications and requirements. Because of this, many of our students do not begin studying for the SAT until their senior year. This leaves them with less time to prepare and fewer times to re-test.
As a result, we created an SAT Prep program targeting sophomore and junior students that have demonstrated potential in their core classes. We believe that by targeting these students, identifying their strengths and weaknesses, and providing a structured environment to practice for the SAT, we will be able to assist them in earning higher scores and surpass the state average.
The Official SAT Study Guide and nutritious snacks will give our students the resources and energy needed to adequately prepare for the SAT exam.
A donation of $30 can provide one of our students the resources they need to be successful after high school.
Students enrolled in the program are required to commit to two after-school tutorials a week. One tutorial session will focus on SAT Math Skills and the other on SAT Reading/Writing. In addition to the tutorials, students will take a full-length practice test each month. The students will track their own progress and set goals as they work towards their desired score. The program will culminate with the students taking the official SAT on May 4th, 2019.
