This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an after school Knit and Craft Club. My after school students are a group of dynamic, diverse, and energetic third, fourth, and fifth graders. Our club is composed of students that live in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Our neighborhood school serves a predominantly Hispanic student body.

All students and teachers at Goethe learn and grow as bucket fillers; we aim high to make sure every student has a full bucket.

We believe that each and every person on this planet carries an invisible bucket that can be filled with compliments and kind deeds, and can be dipped into by disrespectful words and actions. We work hard to fill buckets to ensure that every student feels respected, safe, and excited to learn each and every day at our school. As our principal always says, "bucket filling isn't just kid stuff, it's life stuff!"

My Project

After-school clubs are a huge asset to our elementary school. Many students look forward to getting to know new teachers, spending time with friends, and developing new skills and interests through their extracurricular activities. I run a knitting and crafting club once a week for students interested in expanding their interests in visual arts and crafts.

Our Knit and Craft Club has given the opportunity to many students to discover textile arts and to develop fine-motor skills while exploring their creative and innovative sides.

These materials will allow students to continue developing as knitters. They have mastered the basics of finger-knitting and arm-knitting and they are eager to finally pick up the knitting needles. With these materials they will be able to design much more extensive and creative knitting projects.

Our school lacks additional funding to provide the materials necessary to run an arts and crafts after-school program; often we find ourselves buying the materials ourselves or fundraising. These additional supplies will ensure that my students can continue to design and execute their creative arts projects throughout the 20 weeks of our after-school program. With your donation I will be able to support their creative needs beyond what I currently can with our limited supplies.
