Games Club is one of my favorite parts of being a teacher. It is now one of the only after school club offerings available at my school right now. This is a great opportunity for students to build community and socialize which is something they are still learning to do appropriately. It is great to see students connect and meet new people while doing something they already love to do: play video games. This is especially true for students who often struggle socially, but make connections during the club.
This provides a very supportive and accessible way for students to socialize and build friendships.
It also gives students a warm, inviting space to visit before they head home. This provides them with a safe, indoor location to hang out and be themselves. They deserve the chance to let loose and not hold back. They are loud, but they are being kids and so often, they aren’t allowed to do that. It is a safe place to be a kid and that is why I give up two and half hours every week to support this.
The snacks are essential as students are with me for 2 or more hours before they ride the bus home. They are ravenous and trust that these snacks will be devoured! Students are starving by the end of the day and many don't have the support needed to bring their own snacks.
The comfy chair offers another seating option for students to relax after sitting in hard plastic chairs all day. This will contribute to our comfort corner and bring more warmth and safety to the room.
