This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Join us on an African Safari where students will learn about West African art and culture.
My students are very racially diverse.
They have little experience outside their local community so I am trying to bring the world to them. They do not have the means to pack a lunch, let alone travel abroad. The school is comprised of 97% free lunch and breakfast. My goal is to expand their knowledge of different cultures to create better understanding of others around them.
My Project
I am using a variety of resources for our African Safari. Thanks to the generosity of a local art museum, my students will have the privilege of seeing original art from West Africa. After visiting the mini museum in my classroom, students will learn about African music, customs and literature. The paper, watercolors and permanent markers will allow the students to create their own masterpieces modeled after what they have learned.
My students will be greatly impacted by learning about the West African Culture including music, art and literature.
Hopefully their understanding for other cultures will also be increased.
