My Students
Playing instruments in music class is one of the most memorable music experiences children have. In my culturally diverse school, students experience, create, listen to, and perform a variety of music. However, we are lacking quality instruments, particularly of African origin.
Our school of 750 K-5 students is diverse in cultures, ethnicity, learning styles, and backgrounds.
This is my school's first year to have music class and the students are incredibly enthusiastic about the class. However, I find that I have few of the quality and authentic materials our students need in order to learn about cultures and music styles in a hands-on manner. Seeing a picture of a djembe is much different than playing one, and hearing an African drumming ensemble doesn't compare to taking part in one. Our students need active, hands-on experiences with the cultures we talk about in order to inspire creativity, understanding, cultural acceptance, and a positive world view.
My Project
My students need African drums. These high-quality and child-friendly drums will give students the basic experiences they need with African music-making. We will discuss the role of African music on American music culture, create our own music, use music with literature, and connect our lives with those of others who create music. Students will also experience cross-curricular opportunities with performances on the drums as we connect music content to social studies and art. Thank you for your support in helping our students and for supporting music in our schools!
Stand for music education and its vital role in education by supporting this project.
Our students will be incredibly thankful and excited to acquire such quality and authentically styled instruments!
