Our school of 750 K-5 students is diverse in cultures, ethnicity, learning styles, and backgrounds. This is my school's first year to have music class and the students are incredibly enthusiastic about the class. However, I find that I have few of the quality and authentic materials our students need in order to learn about cultures and music styles in a hands-on manner. Seeing a picture of a djembe is much different than playing one, and hearing an African drumming ensemble doesn't compare to taking part in one. Our students need active, hands-on experiences with the cultures we talk about in order to inspire creativity, understanding, cultural acceptance, and a positive world view.
