This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a suburb of Chicago to students who are under represented in the traditional art reproductions that I have. Vincent Van Gogh and Seurat are not as interesting to these students as Romere Bearden and Jacob Lawerence. My students are mostly African American but the art reproductions I have are mostly white European male artists. They need to see themselves in the artworks as well as role models in the artists. We study cultures, artists and artworks before making our own artwork.
My Project
Students want to see themselves in art and artists. I teach in a suburb of Chicago and my students are mostly African American ethnicity. It would mean more to them to see Jacob Lawrence and Romere Bearden than Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. I am not denying that the European masters are important, just that there is also value in studying African American artists. My students want to study culture, artists and art works of many places and times. Before they make art I like to show them relevant art works. Please help me reach my goal to improve my art poster collection.
