Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our incoming 9th Grade class consists of incredibly resilient and resourceful English Language Learners, general education students, and students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). They are entering our classrooms with a range of lived experiences and academic abilities/proficiencies. Some of our students are lifelong Bronx residents, some come from other boroughs, and some have recently arrived from countries all over the world.
This generation of young learners is incredibly connected; they have demonstrated a robust understanding of who they are and the injustices that attack the different aspects of their identities.
We intend to facilitate learning that hones and nurtures their innate knowledge of identity, culture, society, and how external factors often challenge this knowledge. Now more than ever, they need our support in acclimating to our learning environment so that their transition to high school is as smooth as possible.
My Project
The events that have transpired in the last few months have entirely shifted the way we approach education and how students learn. It is important to me, a Harlem native, turned teacher, that my students have access to diverse texts that affirm and celebrate their identities. This year, incoming 9th graders will engage in a year-long curriculum that explores identity through the lens of several factors. This list of materials includes a series of book collections that have been recommended by several organizations that champion and celebrate Black and Brown authors.
As I build out my classroom library, I want to make sure that my students have access to different types of texts beyond the canonical books that we historically teach in high school classrooms.
We have also included several in-class materials such as chart paper, markers, post-it notes, and other writing utensils that we hope will assist our students in engaging with the texts in an academically appropriate manner. I have also included a few Kindle Fire immersion readers which assists students who are English Language learners with an interactive, guided approach to reading.
