This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The dancers of TCHS are a phenomenal group of 10th-12th graders who train daily to hone their skills. As students in a career technical education program, my students declare themselves as dance majors. These learners are physically expressive, socially conscious, and creative individuals. As a community we view education and art-making as tools for empowerment, self-reflection, and social change.
Ownership and membership are important feelings that my student teacher and I want to foster as we enter into the 2022-2023 school year.
Having a classroom that feels safe, welcoming and comfortable, will help our students make a home within the dance studio. During this past year, we have engaged with a breadth of workshops on culturally responsive arts education. Inspired by anti-racist pedagogy experts Dr. Bettina Love, Dr. Christopher Emdin, and Dr. Nyama McCarthy-Brown, we am examining how my physical dance classroom space consciously and unconsciously provides messaging about who belongs and is celebrated in the space.
To further this experience for our students, we are requesting a custom LED sign that reads, “Love you, Mean it, Bye.” This is a quote is our classroom motto that is shared from teacher to students as well as from students to other students. We would love to hang this sign on a fun, green grass wall that will be hung by command strips. During the opening of school we plan to take photographs of our class community and add this to the wall using our hanging photo lights and Polaroid Printer.
