Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a small neighborhood in Los Angeles, our students push themselves to overcome the disadvantages of being from underprivileged areas and fight the stereotypes held against minorities.
My students work hard to deserve the opportunities we give them, showing enthusiasm, vigor, and decorum beyond what you would expect for typical high schoolers.
They push for us to join competitions outside of class, stay after school for office hours, and are active members of their communities. Our school emphasizes STEM fields, and we are annually recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top high schools in the country.
My Project
The students at my school look nothing like the scientists they learn about. Our current textbook choices tend to be largely dry and ignore the contributions of scientists of color.
I'm trying to prevent my students coming to a class where all they see are people completely different from them.
The books in this project have colorful and exciting stories about science being used in practical or innovative ways that excite the imagination. They share diagrams and stories that invite imaginative, critical observations and thinking. For many, unique books like these make the difference between staying involved and giving up.
