Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our classroom we focus on creating peace with ourselves, with each other, and with the environment. This project focuses on hands-on approaches to caring for our local environment. In this project students will participate in campus and community clean-ups and focus on understanding trash.
Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.
There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peace-building and community-building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian and 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Approximately two-thirds of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally.
My Project
In this experiential, project-based unit, students will be active participants in campus, beach, and community clean-ups. We will read the novel Trash and use the supplementary resources to learn about the damaging effects of over-consumption and of the polluting of the oceans with plastics. Classroom activities will include investigations of human consumption, landfills, and recycling. Students will watch DVDs, such as Wasteland and Disney Educational Production's Bill Nye - Pollution Solution, and learn about global efforts to improve the environment. As a culminating project, students will present their findings in PowerPoints, skits, posters, essays, and editorials. Finally, we engage in clean-up efforts on our campus, on our beaches, and in our community.
Middle school students are not always aware of the impact of their personal choices on the environment.
Students have become accustomed to turning on the water, flushing the toilet, putting out the trash, and switching on the lights. This unit offers the opportunity for students to see the interconnectedness of people and the environment. It also provides our kids a hands-on opportunity to clean our campus, keep litter out of the sea, change our consumption habits, and live more sustainably.
