Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

My students live in a community surrounded by poverty, with this project I would love to get funded because I want my students to become involved in advocating for themselves and their community. I want students to become problem solvers. We are going to create projects that involve finding and doing research on issues that involve their community. Once my students find a problem in their community after diligent research they will create their own solution on how to solve the problem.

“Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today.” Robert McKee

My students will begin their story by first finding the problem and solving it. Civic learning is a process through which young people develop the knowledge, skills, and commitments to interact effectively with fellow community members to address shared problems.

My students will write letters to the borough president from the Bronx President Ruben Diaz Jr, in order to explain why their opinion matters and why should this change should occur and how it will benefit their community. Please help my students get the resources they need to become advocates. This is why I am requesting, stationary paper, ink, paper rolls, stamps, envelopes, so they can write a letter to advocates the rights of their community.
