Our classroom is a collaborative work area located in our media center in an area we call our Maker Space. In this area, our students work on project based learning and spend time exploring everything from construction to coding to electronics.
Our school is a middle school (6th-8th grades) with approximately 600 students, the majority of which are on free and reduced lunch.
Our school is a "community" school where we feel the support and investment of our local community. As with many schools, our county has experienced a major reduction in funding over the past few years.
My Project
While our students are familiar with using technology in the classroom, we do not have the equipment needed to create and control robots. Having this robotics set will allow us to have robotics competitions within our school and will allow us to use the robotic kits within math classes. In math classes, students will program the robots to maneuver based on graphs they have created. We plan to run the robotics competition after school through our STEAM club and through our Maker Space. The Lego Robotics kit and a Snap Circuits Rover kit students will learn how to write the computer code which runs the robots. Additionally, students will learn how to test and modify the code they write.
Funding this project will allow our students to explore computer coding and the world of robots.
Because we will use it in math class, in addition to our competitions, students will see the real world connections between math, computer coding, and robots.
