Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My preschoolers are always curious and have a deep desire to learn. Most of our activities, as it is in preschool are hands-on and practical. Technology is a major component in the developmental curriculum to children these days. Early exposure is a key element to give them a head start.
The majority of my children arrive at opening: Seven O'clock in the morning.
They come from low income and high poverty neighborhoods surrounding our center. Parents work eight or more low paying jobs and therefore, they spend from eight to ten hours under our care. This works, in a way, to my advantage since being with a typical baby sitter would not give them the opportunity to be exposed to early literacy (A major component for healthy development, cognitively and socially) They are curious and possess an enormous desire to learn. And I, as their teacher, utilize any tool available to maximize their potential. It is rewarding to see how excited they are when they arrive with their parents and how delighted they feel to be back in the classroom every morning. Despite their limitations and economic disadvantage they bring their smiles and hugs every morning to brighten up my day.
My Project
My students have used an old Ipad (first generation) I purchased a few years ago but it's no longer working well. I purchased and downloaded several eBooks and games into it and their interest in books and brain games sparked to a new dimension since I started using it during circle and small group time. The vivid and animated images changed their perception about books and the issue of wear and tear with typical books disappeared. With the newcomers, the issue of anxiety and parent separation became easier to handle every time I used my old Ipad to present the stories at circle time. They were able to slide the pages with their little fingers and played an active role during the activity. They continue to enjoy the old traditional books but continue to ask for the "Magic Book" what we used to call it to play the brain teaser games I had sored in it.
The integration of technology must be an important component in the early education curriculum.
Early exposure will give preschoolers a hear start and an advantage to succeed in life. Sadly, when The LAUSD decided to provide Ipads for all children (K-12) they forgot about us. Organizations such as First 5 LA have contributed to past projects I have requested because they believe, and quote: "in innovative projects that will help insure children in Los Angeles County are ready for kindergarten".
