Help me give my students hard copies of books they are required to read while in remote learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students, better known as ASPIRAntes, are a cohort of dedicated, curious learners, many of whom aspire to be first-generation college graduates. Academic excellence doesn't come easily to all of them, but working hard to overcome challenges does. Helping them achieve their academic goals is my priority!
My students are remotely learning for the foreseeable future of the 2020-2021 school year. They are 9th graders following the MyPerspectives English Language Arts curriculum. Two of the texts required for the curriculum are classic works of literature, My Antonia, dealing with the immigrant experience, and the Lord of the Flies, a book highlighting the themes of extremity and survival. Students will be responding to these texts, making connections with current issues of immigration in America and life and death in the time of a pandemic.
Students love to handle texts, highlight texts, dog-ear pages, and make concrete books part of their tangibly-lived experiences.
Hard copies of these texts will help bring needed variety of instruction and learning and more moderated screen reading time to my students as explore these important works of literature. I am also using the novel, Contaminated as a high-interest, similar-themed work for my lower Lexile readers.
Because both of these texts are compatible with the Lexile range of the 9th and 10th grade reading strands of the Common Core, they will help students meet essential grade-level reading standards:
"By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range."
