Adventures in BMHS Book Clubs

My Students

My students are readers; however, they did not start out that way. I teach all levels of sophomores and a class of seniors. When I was able to implement the idea of choice reading, my students became true readers of books instead of fake reading their way through the required novels. For twenty minutes each day, my students get to take a breath, take a break, and read a book. There are no assignments, no expectations, no paper, and no study guides. They just read.

My students are kind and honest and invested in their education.

But many of them are not able to find the time to read on their own. Many of my students tell me they haven't read a book of their own choosing ever. I decided that if I wanted my students to be readers, I needed to provide them contemporary and diverse books to read and the time to do so.

My Project

A few years ago I became passionate about incorporating choice reading into my classroom on a daily basis - and my students have thrived and love the experience of being able to read works of their own choosing to them connect to the novels we read in the curriculum.

This year my focus is to add book clubs so that my students can all choose a text of the same genre and we can then have discussions about common works, with common themes, but they have the choice and control of what they are reading.

The beauty of book clubs is that whether we are in a traditional setting in school or remote learning or a hybrid of the two - book clubs are a wonderful way to keep students together in discussions model. A distance learning model will call for an even greater need for student connection - and the choice in book clubs will make them feel that more more connected and vested in our classroom!
