Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at JJAEP. Our students range from 10 to 17 years of age. Some of the kids here have made a bad choice in life and some have really messed up, but who hasn't at some point in life. We try to teach the kids that this one choice doesn't have to define their life. Learn and move on. These students are bright and very talented, they've just never been given the opportunity to shine. Here, away from the distractions of a regular classroom these students have the opportunity to be heard. Their personalities come out and they are not afraid to be the star. It's amazing to see these students' faces when they finally get a report card with passing grades. I love that I have the opportunity to make a difference with these kids.
My Project
The books we are requesting are the books that have been requested by the students. Our students who come to us have not been given books to read as children. With reading in our program, these students have found enjoyment in something they thought was boring and a waste of time. Our students appreciate that we try to get them books they want to read and take very good care of the library we are building.
These books the students have requested will help to increase their academic achievement as they grow into stronger readers.
It's a pleasure to hear students say that they didn't know reading could be so fun.
