We are a Title I school where over 60% of the population receive free or reduce lunch. Even though my school is very culturally diverse, we are extremely competitive and we strive for excellence daily. The girls club at our school is designed to broaden the students horizon by thinking outside the box for new adventures. Our club motto is to educate, engage, and expose our young learners to careers and experiences they wouldn't normally have access to. The careers we are focusing on this year are jobs in conservation and marine life.
Our future oceanographers, marine biologist, and conservationists are eager to learn more about these careers with hands on experiences.
My mission as a teacher/sponsor is to find creative learning experiences that will educate, engage, and expose the girls to many new opportunities. This is especially important after the devastation our city faced with Hurricane Harvey. Although our school suffered minor damage, many of our girls club members are still adjusting to life after Harvey.
My Project
The girls club this year will be studying marine life and careers within that field. In May 2018, our girls are trying to get hands-on training through Disney Youth Education Series Program on marine life conservation. Our young learners will discover the difference between looking and observation, gain an in depth knowledge of sea turtles, and build a module of a turtle excluder device. This lesson helps our girls understand the impact humans have on the ocean.
This education program will not only give the girls exposure with the hands on experience, but also an engaging experience of a lifetime to travel to the most magical place on earth!
The girls will play the role of conservationists while learning the difficulties facing aquatic wildlife. Throughout this experience our ambitious learners will document their discoveries in order to create projects that will educate all students at our elementary school on the importance of marine life conservation.
