My Students
I am a teacher in a Title I public school, located in Pahoa, Hawaii. Our school serves students from pre-K to 6th grade that come from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
My students are culturally-grounded, inquisitive, and tenacious learners who deserve the materials needed to be successful.
My students come from all areas of lower Puna. Our community has been affected by lava flows, hurricanes, and covid, but that hasnʻt stopped them from coming to school with a positive attitude and zest for learning.
My Project
Reading is one of the most important skills we teach as educators! Finding the joy in reading is something that must be fostered from a young age and nurtured as students continue to grow. I myself love to read and try to embed my joy for reading through each of my lessons each and every day. But sadly, my classroom has a limited library for my students to borrow and read from. The students will often skim through the classroom library and find books that are outdated, ripped, torn, or simply of no interest to them.
The books I am requesting will allow students to adventure to unknown lands where their imaginations can run wild and free!
With these new sets of books, students will be able to find the joy of reading with texts at their own reading level. These books will help to bring our classroom to life and help us achieve a print-rich learning environment!
More than half of students from low‑income households
