As an AVID class, at least 85% of my students are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and/or will be first generation college students. My students are those in the academic middle who are often overlooked in regards to extra services. These students are selected based on their immense work ethic and individual determination for success. As AVID students they have chosen to give up their related arts classes to pursue additional academic support in all classes during their AVID elective period. We also work on college and career readiness skills and some of the soft skills to help them perform in the current job market, such as inquiry, organization, collaboration, and critical thinking.
In our class, we are a family of learners who always push the limits and look for ways to expand horizons.
Many of my students do not have the resources to travel outside of our area unless provided those opportunities through school, and as such it is imperative that we explore all avenues for them to see outside opportunities including collaborating via technology, learning about varying careers and colleges, virtual field trips and more. Additionally we work to create strong citizens through several hours of community service each year.
My Project
I am requesting Everlast Smart Notebooks which will be utilized multiple years for students to take and organize Cornell notes. Students will utilize these notebooks in all of their classes in order to store notes in their digital binders for access later from all locations. This will allow students greater accessibility for studying their notes and utilizing them throughout their courses.
Students will advance both their note taking and technology skills better preparing them for college.
Once students enter highs school and post secondary education, they are in need of skills to utilize technology for learning. Digital note taking is one method to prepare them for more in depth educational technology.
