My students need 3 binders to organize their notes and class materials. It is a requirement of the AVID program that our students use the 3 binders for ALL classes.

My Students

Can you imagine being the first in your family to graduate from college? AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. AVID focuses on the least served students in the academic middle.

We currently have 2 classes of 9th graders in our AVID program - evenly mixed boys and girls.

The students have committed to taking Honors and AP level courses - maintaining a "C" or better at all times. They must stay out of trouble and keep good attendance. They also take on leadership roles or join sports and clubs within the school. Our students come from many different backgrounds but all possess the motivation to reach the college level. We are a high poverty public high school with 2100 students enrolled. Our AVID students are the kind that would typically get "lost in the crowd." We hope to raise them above the crowd and mold them into future leaders.

My Project

The AVID curriculum requires our students to carry a 3" binder to store all of their classwork. AVID students are graded on this binder every week. In their academic classes, they are expected to take Cornell notes and they also participate in tutorial sessions twice a week in our AVID classroom. The extra time students spend in our AVID class provides academic and personal support for the tough class loads they each carry.

Nearly all of our students come from high poverty situations.

Most of them have a single parent or grandparent raising them and funds for school supplies are extremely limited. By providing these binders to them, we are helping them take that first step towards a successful high school and college career. Next year, we will be adding four additional AVID classes and will be in great need of supplies for these students.
