This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
To help continue fostering a love of reading for students, we are creating an advanced reading bookclub for learners who are seeking more challenging texts to work with. Through this opportunity, scholars with advanced reading skills will be able to work on texts that are outside of the scope of their standard curriculum with a literacy specialist. In the spaces provided, students will be able to engage in critical thinking around various challenging topics while also building the advanced skills of discourse around advanced readings.
Reading is such an amazing way to engage learners in productive discourse around topics that can be very challenging.
What is so unique about the learners who will be engaging in these advanced reading book clubs is that they all come from diverse backgrounds with such eloquent ways of viewing the world and the challenges that one may face. The students are so excited about these opportunities to engage in learning outside of the standard curriculum.
In connection with this project, the goal is that scholars in the bookclubs will be able to write up book reviews to really think critically about literature. They goal will be to have a space for them to be able to publish their reviews of the texts we read.
