Advanced Placement AB Calculus Printer

My students need a printer with ink to print their work from Advanced Placement AB Calculus class. They also need markers to use when showing their work on the Elmo.

My Students

It has been said that "mathematics is not a spectator sport." I couldn't agree more with this statement. I expect my students to work cooperatively and share ideas with each other daily. Having a printer in the classroom will allow students to print, scan, or copy their work from class.

I work in an inner city public high school in Pennsylvania with approximately 1400 students.

We have math classes ranging from Algebra 1 through Advanced Placement BC Calculus, AP Statistics and AP Computer Science. I teach Scholars and Advanced Placement AB Calculus and usually teach around 110 students every day. My students are bused from various neighborhoods within the city which creates diversity within my classroom. My students are very hard workers, enjoy mathematics, love using graphing calculators, iPads, and other forms of technology. I was very fortunate to receive 19 graphing calculators last year that my students share daily. This year I am trying to obtain a classroom printer for students to print, make copies and/or scan their work. A lot of my students come into class daily asking me to print something for them from either their flash drive or their email. Not all of my students can afford to have printers in their homes to use. Having this printer will benefit us all.

My Project

As stated above, I work in an inner city high school in Pennsylvania. Funding has been cut over the years which means I do not have all of the necessary equipment for teaching. In fact, if and when our classroom printers break, we are not given another one. My printer has broken this year, so that is why I am requesting a new one. If I am able to receive a printer for the classroom, it will make such a difference in how we do things in class. I will be able to print warm-ups, worksheets/activity sheets, grade sheets for students, exit slips, to name a few. Students will be able to make copies if necessary, (since a lot of my students do have printers at home) and more importantly scan their work. By scanning their work we can then save it and email it to each other to share findings with everyone in the class. Through TI Connect Software we will also be able to download our work from our TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculators onto our computer and then print our findings/work for each other.

How can having a computer in the classroom not improve my classroom?

Having a printer in the classroom will alleviate any embarrassing moments for students who do not have their work because they don't have a printer at home to print it. Also, it will be so exciting to connect our work from our calculators to the computer, and then print and share our findings. I think students will be happy to incorporate technology in class, take ownership for their learning, and stay actively engaged daily.
