This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Underglazes will allow my students to create unique and personalized designs, enhancing the individuality of each innovative form they create this semester. Underglaze helps students created detailed designs and is less prone to running or smudging so young artists can build confidence. We are also able to add underglaze to wet clay, and it offers a matte finish that's ideal for adding subsequent layers of glaze or decorative elements.

Using underglaze on bisque fired clay has 5 advantages that give students an artistic edge; The vessel is less fragile, we don’t have to worry about the underglaze getting the clay body too wet, students can work almost as if they are painting and can add small details, and they can blend and mix the exact colors they want to use.

Underglaze can also be used on wet clay, which is excellent for students who are frequently absent and may miss days when I am firing clay pieces. This allowed students to catch up on assignments instead of waiting for the ceramics to be bisque fired. Once students have had their pieces fired, I will sometimes glaze fire the work for them. This means I will make their artwork shine. This is particularly appreciated by students when the semester or the year is about to end.
