My Students

Dear Friends,

My kindergarten scholars are some of the most motivated individuals I know!

My five and six-year-old scholars are learning to read, write, and use computer skills. Many are learning English as a second language! By the end of kindergarten, my scholars will be writing short stories, opinion pieces, and reading at a first grade level.

Most importantly, they are observing and learning how to be "Peace Builders" in their classroom and community. They are learning how to share and "seek wise people" or ask for help when facing a problem they are unable to fix. My scholars are learning how to use kind words to genuinely "praise people" for their actions. As five and six-year-old students, they are practicing how to be spectacular citizens of the world.

My Project

Earlier this school year, I was able to secure 9 Amazon Kindle tablets for my 27 scholars. My scholars use these tablets every day during guided reading centers, indoor recess, and math centers. With access to technology, my scholars' learning has improved tremendously! They love to read on the tablets, watch and listen to stories being told, and play games to advance their academics. They also love to watch the recordings of themselves reading!

With the Microsoft Surface Go tablet, I hope to give my scholars more opportunities to learn English and learn about our community using technology.

I teach in a charter school with the Milwaukee Public School District and am limited with resources (limited prints and copies, no color prints, limited technology). 100% of the students at my school qualify for free breakfast and lunch; many of the children are from non-native English speaking households, and many of these scholars are first-generation Americans. Many of my scholars would benefit from more exposure with English vocabulary and American social experiences i.e some have never been to the movie theater or amusement park, but we read books about these places. Some are unable to name animals that an average child their age would be able to name. Some are in need of more visuals than what I am able to print and provide.

While my school laptop is connected to the classroom projector, the Microsoft Surface Go tablet will be used at the guided reading center to show photos in color, show videos for background knowledge for the book we will read, play literacy games, and answer questions (i.e. what does a bugle sound like?) It will also give me the opportunity to take more efficient notes while working with my scholars and help me assess their learning.
