Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. Our school often has the greatest ethnic diversity of all the schools in the state. The majority of them receive free or reduced lunch. Our school encourages project-based learning especially those activities that promote the development of 21st-century skills.
Like most kids, they thrive in a learning environment in which they are actively engaged and challenged.
Our school encourages technology-based learning which typically, which prepares them for high demand professions but also has a side effect of increased screen and seat time. I like incorporating technology activities but also to keep my classes physically active and provide supportive learning environments.
My Project
I have 3 expectations in my classroom; be respectful, be polite, and be kind. I try to create a learning environment in which students show compassion to themselves and each other. Bringing the axolotl, an endangered animal, into the classroom, will promote students to extend their respect and compassion to animals and their environment.
It is important for students to learn their connectedness to animals and their natural environments so that they can be responsible stewards of our planet.
By inviting these axolotls into the classroom, I expect my students to work daily, in small groups, to care for them. We will start by studying their natural environment, research threats to axolotl populations, and create possible solutions to increase their populations. We will also learn how to set up the aquarium and basic animal husbandry and care. These axolotls will be valued members of our classroom community and teach the students appreciation and compassion for living things.
