The students in my Marine Science class have joined this elective for 2 purposes, they are interested in learning more about the ocean and its inhabitants and to be ambassadors to protect it. In taking on this endeavor, my students are using technology to educate their community on these problems.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds with one common passion; the ocean.
They bring their own experiences with the ocean from the basics of playing at the beach to being scuba certified. Some students are motivated to focus on a specific type of organisms like sharks or dolphins while others are amazed by the variety and uniqueness of organisms that live in the deep sea. Our school is a school composed of motivated learners that have a strong sense of community within a very large student body.
My Project
We plan to use the iPad minis for a variety of purposes. My students will create slideshows and videos to educate their school and community on the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans. We will also create infomercials with true statistics about sharks and shark encounters. Finally, my students will do research and participate in online interactive websites and Google tools. Students will be learning how to use various tools of technology with the emphasis on Marine Science education.
This project will make a difference because my students will take the tools they are somewhat familiar with and develop them to be learning tools used to educate their peers and community.
The Internet and technology offer so many opportunities for my students to go beyond the four walls of our classroom.
