Our students are diagnosed with Autism and in need of supplies to learn functional life skills that help them to become more independent in their everyday lives. These supplies are for our students who have severe and profound developmental disabilities and who are diagnosed with Autism. Our students with Autism in particular, need to become proficient in topics related to cleaning, clerical tasks, landscaping and gardening, property maintenance, food preparation and self-care skills. Many of our students are non-verbal and come here to learn formal methods of communication through sign language, picture symbols and voice output devices. Our students range in age from 14 – 21.
My Project
These materials will help my students continue to practice appropriate hygiene skills at home. When in the building we provide our students the opportunity to complete these ADL skills (washing our face, brushing our teeth). These materials might not be available for all my students while learning from home. We expect students to maintain routine by practicing these ADL skills. Our ASD students are dependent on routine and this gets us a step closer to achieving that goal. We continue to work on our independent living skills while assisting parents.
