My Students
I run the Art and Architecture Studio in an inner-city high school with approximately 150 students a semester. Studio Art class teaches and practices the fundamentals of drawing, design, and painting. The Architecture class is for students that are interested in a career pathway in Art, Architecture, and Design and Construction. The AP Art History class is also a part of the career pathway.
Many of the students are newcomers from China, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and other students are 2nd generation Asian, Latinx, African American, and White.
30% of my students have learning disabilities and 25% are long-term English Language Learners. Many students live in public housing, some in the Foster Care System, and a few are Homeless and navigating things on their own.
The Art Room has become a culturally diverse place where everyone is openly accepted, appreciated, and celebrated for both their likenesses and their differences. We believe that diversity begets strength.
My Project
The Art and Architecture Studio must replace existing, outdated drafting tables that are stationery and do not adjust to various angles or to a flat position. Ideally, the tables would adjust from a flat surface to a 45 degree or lower angle. Architecture students, Art students, and AP Art History students would all benefit by having the option of a flat surface or an angled surface to complete their projects. The current drafting tables were built when the school opened in 1931 with attached metal swinging stools (many are broken), multiple drawers (that get stuffed with garbage), registers that take quite a bit of maintenance with parts that are harder and harder to find each year.
