My Project
I've been an ELA teacher for 11 years, but next school year I'm also taking on a new adventure--teaching Spanish 1 and 2! As a fluent Spanish-speaker certified by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), I'm excited to reach new students and help them prepare for their futures.
My Spanish 2 students' learning and language development will be greatly enhanced with the supports that graphic novels offer.
These books are a collection of engaging texts with a variety of stories and vocabulary, and the books' visuals offer support to help students gain additional understanding and language as they read. Many, many studies have confirmed how beneficial graphic novels are to second-language learners, and I'm excited for the opportunity to extend this to my Spanish 2 students.
We will use the graphic novels for individual silent reading, of course, but we will also use them for reading aloud in small groups or in partnerships. These books will be labeled and curated in a new special Spanish-language section of our classroom library. Students will be able to check out books as well, to give them even more opportunities to learn both inside and outside of school.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them would not be able to afford to purchase a tutor or resources like these on their own. We have a lot of Spanish speakers in our area, so learning Spanish will open up so many opportunities to my students in the world of business, as well as in life.
I'm excited for our adventures in Spanish 2, and I hope you'll support this project. ¡Adelante!
