Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are critical thinkers. They are mathematicians, scientists, and historians. They are compassionate, hard working, and inspirational. They are athletes, comedians, and artists.

In a time of political, societal, and economic turbulence, my students continue to demonstrate tenacity, willpower, independence, and a drive to succeed.

In addition to their academic challenges, my students face adversities daily. Many of my students experience turbulence at home, extreme poverty, and the side effects of gang violence in their communities. My students, however, are not victims. They are leaders, fighters, and self-advocates. But more, importantly, every day, they refuse to be a statistic; every day, they defy the odds, and they fight to tell their own stories.

My Project

Sonia Sotomayor once said, "I think it's important to move people beyond just dreaming into doing. They have to be able to see that you are just like them, and you made it". The Adelante Mujer Latina Conference provides middle and high school aged girls the chance to explore the wide range of career and educational opportunities available to them. The conference brings together influential and successful Latinas who serve as role models and mentors in a variety of career fields.

My goal is to help inspire the young women of Animo Venice Charter High School by encouraging them to pursue their dreams, plan for their futures, and learn from the women who have paved the path for Latinas in our society.

By attending the Adelante Mujer Conference, my students will have the opportunity to participate in various career and educational workshops, hear from keynote speakers, and explore a plethora of resources and pathways available to them. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. After high school, some will attend the most prestigious universities in the United States, some will enroll in a community college, and others will pursue career opportunities. This conference provides each young woman the opportunity to learn, grow, and dream, as she begins to pave the path for the young women that will soon follow in her footsteps.
