Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5 and 6 years old. They are young, energetic, and excited about beginning their academic careers. They are proud of what they are accomplishing this year and look forward to gaining more knowledge each day.
Many of the students come from low-income homes.
Housing can change for the students on a monthly basis as they may need to move into a homeless shelter, in with relatives, friends, etc. This year we have gained and lost students each month. It has been hard to say goodbye to so many students, but it has also been exciting to gain students that have never been in school before and watch them grow and develop each week. Many of my students lack educational support at home. We work diligently at school to keep the children excited and engaged throughout the school day. We try to offer the children a variety of activities through games, hands-on centers, worksheets, art, and technology.
My Project
Studies have found that 1 in every 6 children has sensory issues that make it hard to learn and function in school. While sensory processing issues are often seen in autistic children, they can also be found in those with ADHD, OCD and other developmental delays—or with no other diagnosis at all.
Flexible seating can provide clear boundaries for personal space, especially fro students who struggle with self regulation during whole group instruction.
The Giam Kids Balance Ball Chair is perfect for whole group, learning centers, and small group instruction. They will also be used for and for Rest Time or anytime an individual student may need a break.
Providing a few different flexible seating options will reduce sensory meltdowns and promote student engagement.
The various seating options can provide an opportunity for additional sensory input or a reduction of input.
Using different seating for different stations in the classroom will also provide a visual clue to what is expected from the student. Each learning space will be set up with visual cues, unique to that particular learning station.
