Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school students from the central Phoenix area are predominantly from a Mexican/Chicano background and encompass approximately 80% of the student population. In total our school has 96% students of color and is a Title I school.

Our students and the neighborhood are very special and important to us.

Our students will tell you that they have strong family values and have given their families priority during this Covid pandemic. They will also share that they have strong interests in not only listening to music, but playing and creating music. They are also environmentally aware and care for the environment and take part in small everyday actions to protect the earth. Our students love art and in many ways are risk takers in the learning process in creating art pieces (as an English teacher I feel they also are very creative in their writing of their stories and poetry- it's amazing!) Even though some of our students may say they do not like to read, I think they secretly do. I have had some great experiences watching my students pick up a book to read and genuinely talk about their thoughts on it.

My Project

I am requesting materials for a much needed and teacher requested professional development. The pd would be for a book study using the essential text "Rethinking Multicultural Education - Teaching for Racial and Cultural Justice" which includes the best educational articles on race, ethnicity and class that will help guide teachers pedagogy in lesson and curriculum planning.

This PD can have a huge impact in how teachers understand students which will impact student classroom performance.

The goal is to show students their home and representation in the classroom through curriculum and instruction.
